Evidence For Christianity

Documenting The Overwhelming Evidence For The Christian Faith

Jesus Was Born During The Feast Of Tabernacles

As we enter the back stretch of the year, people are once again going to start preparing to celebrate the birth of Jesus on Christmas Day.  But the truth is that Jesus was not born on December 25th.  The shepherds would have never been out with their sheep at night during the winter.  It snows during the winter in Israel.

So where do we get December 25th from?  Well, it was NOT from the early Christians.  In fact, they did not celebrate December 25th for the first 300 years of the Church.

December 25th was actually a pagan holiday that had been celebrated as the birthday for a whole host of pagan sun gods long before Christians ever celebrated it.  You can read much more about the history of Christmas in an article we did for our sister site: "December 25th Was Baal’s Birthday Before It Was Celebrated As Christmas".

When the Catholic religion was legalized in the 4th century, they adopted the pagan holiday held on December 25th and they continued to practice the same pagan traditions associated with that holiday.  But they felt it was okay now because it was suddenly "all about Jesus".

So when was Jesus actually born?

Well, using the chronology in the gospel of Luke, it seems quite clear that He was born during the Feast of Tabernacles.  In the four short videos below, Pastor Mark Biltz examines the Scriptures surrounding the birth of the Messiah and explains why it is almost certain that it was during this festival when Jesus was born.....

I must be missing something simple I'm sure:

...in Deut 16:13 it reads, "Thou shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days..."

....but in the videos here we're saying the feast of tabernacles is eight days?

What am I missing? (btw, great job of explaining the Lord's true birthday!)

Only problem I find was in Part III when the pastor quotes the Scripture telling us that Jesus was born in a manger because there was no room for them at the inn--"There was no room for them at the inn because there were 2-1/2 million visitors in Jerusalem." Problem: the inn was in BETHLEHEM. Just sayin'...
Merry Christmas to ALL!

"Speak to the people of Israel, saying, On the fifteenth day of this seventh month and for seven days is the Feast of Booths to the LORD. On the first day shall be a holy convocation; you shall not do any ordinary work. For seven days you shall present food offerings to the LORD. On the EIGHTH day you shall hold a holy convocation and present a food offering to the LORD. It is a solemn assembly; you shall not do any ordinary work."
(Lev 23:34-36, ESV emphasis added)

It looks like there's an eighth day in this description.
